The Appointment of an Assistant Mistress to the Education Department of Hong Kong.

1. The Secretary of State for the Colonies requires an assistant mistress for the Education Department, Hong Kong.

2. Candidates who are between 25 and 30 years of age will be preferred.

3. The mistress is required to possess qualifications such as the Cambridge Teachers' Certificate or the Oxford or London University Diploma.

She is required to be able to teach arithmetic, religious knowledge, history, English language and literature and geography up to the standard of the senior Oxford local examination, It is also desirable that she should be able to teach two subjects of each of the following groups of subjects:-Group I., French, sewing, Swedish drill; Group II., music (piano), domestic economy, drawing, German, Latin, 4. The engagement will be in the first instance for three years, and if at the end of the time her service has been satisfactory the Assistant Mistress will be placed, if mutually agreed, on the pensionable establishment of the Colony.

5. A salary at the rate of 2007. for each of the three years of the engagement will be paid to the assistant mistress, with free quarters or an allowance of 600 dollars in lieu thereof, and subject to the permission of the Director of Education she may undertake private tuition. Half salary will be paid from the date of embarkation from England and full salary from the date of arrival in the Colony. If the Assistant Mistress is placed on the pensionable establishment her salary will be at the rate of 2201, a year.

The currency of Hong Kong is based on the silver dollar. For purposes of payments in the Colony, salaries fixed in sterling are converted into dollars as regards 80 per cent. at the rate of 18. 9d. to the dollar and as regards 20 per cent. at a rate fixed by the Government and based upon the average exchange value of the dollar during the month ending on the 15th of the month for which salary is to be paid.

6. The Mistress is required to teach English children (girls and young boys) in combined elementary and secondary schools. She is liable to be transferred to schools where similar instruction is given to Chinese girls, but such transfers are

rare.

7. Second-class passage by P, & O. mail steamer or first-class passage by a steamer other than a mail steamer is provided, and also a return passage at the end of three years if the engagement is not renewed for other reasons than misconduct.

A return passage will also be provided before the expiration of three years if the Assistant Mistress is incapacitated from further service by mental or physical disability.
